Combed spinning

Manifattura Filarte has been located in the historic Biella district since 1972. This Carded Spinning Mill is a versatile plant that allows the production of pure or blended yarns, using vegetable, animal, synthetic and recycled fibers.

For over 50 years, Filarte has been a benchmark in the spinning industry, thanks to the experience gained and the commitment of its team of professionals.
In 2019, Maeko Srl’s partners acquired Manifattura Filarte and thus incorporated its know-how and skills.

In Maeko's production cycle, the Spinning Mill plays a fundamental role, as it enables to perform customised processes for companies. At the "Artisanal Space" of Filarte, clients can design and create their own yarns based on technical, aesthetic or communicative needs, under aid of the experience of Mauro Vismara.

The historical Biellese district is where Manifattura Filarte’s headquarter’s been since 1972, this our Combed Spinning’s name, this is a versatile plant which allows us to create pure or mixed yarns from plants, animals and recycled fibers.

The spinning is a very important part of the production process, where the customers are able to understand their technical and aesthetic necessities together with Mauro Vismara.

Furthermore, Filarte is also the site of the experimental project, launched over 5 years ago with the aim of reviving the Italian textile hemp spinning, an ambitious goal that involves the constant commitment of Maeko's team.

"It takes patience to make a yarn" and this can be realized only through an orderly sequence of activities: preparation, spinning and finally winding.

The fibers arrive at the Spinning Mill in large compressed bales, disordered tufts that require several mechanical steps to open, move and rearrange them before moving on to the next carding operation. This is followed by blending, the first combing and other consecutive processes aimed to parallelize and separate the fibers (from this last stage derives the meaning of Combed Spinning). Then, depending on their length and only after reaching the optimal conditions, the fibers are ready to pass to the finisher where an orderly bundle of fibers is gradually mounted on bobbins to create the wick.

Once the wick is achieved, it begins the proper ring spinning phase known as “Ring”: each bobbin is loaded onto the ring which generates a rotational and stretching motion to transform the wick into yarn. This phase is completed when the yarn is wound onto small tubes called spools.

Then we reach the very final step called winding, where the spools transfer the thread to cones. Finally, the Yarn is ready to be used for manufacturing fabrics, knitwear and needlework.

Filarte is also the final part of the circular activity for the experimental RIFLOC project, which since 2005 aims to reconstruct the Italian textile hemp supply chain.

"Making a thread requires patience, it takes form through an ordered sequence: preparation, spinning, and then winding."

The fibers reach the facility in big pressured bales from which the flakes are going to be moved and rearranged before the carding phase. Following these steps there is the mixing part, and the combing part, where the fibers are separated and paralleled (this is where the Combed Spinning definition comes from). After this process, the threads are then gradually mounted on reels creating a wick.

All these activities involve the use of expert hands and organized minds, a task usually covered by trained and selected staff who work exclusively in each single phase to maintain excellent and constant production.

In November 2024, Maeko Srl incorporated Manifattura Filarte through a merger operation. Since then all of Maeko's activities and offices have been definitively transferred to the Quaregna Cerreto site, bringing together the skills and resources of the two entities in a single production hub.

Thanks to this integration, Maeko Srl is now an even stronger and more determined company, ready to face future challenges with renewed energy. Our goal is to continue offering our clients unique and original yarns, the result of a consolidated manufacturing tradition and a constant commitment to innovation.

After obtaining the wick we now enter in the true spinning phase also known as Ring. The single reels are loaded on the Ring which creates a rotating motion that turns the wick in a yarn. This phase ends when the yarn is rolled up on small tubes named bobbins.

There is one last phase named winding. There is one last phase named winding.

Now the yarn is finally ready for fabrics’ and knitting production.

Each one of these activities in controlled by trained and expert hands and clear minds, this tasks are given to the most organized and specialized teams.
