Alkanna

Herbs - Dyeing roots for infusions

Price range: 12,00€ through 37,00€

L’Alkanna, also known as “Alkanet root“is a plant in the Boraginaceae family. Its root contains a natural pigment called Alchannina, which gives it a wine-red colouring.

In our shop, you will find the dried root of Alkanna, already reduced to pieces for easy use. To prepare the infusion, simply boil the root pieces in water and let them steep for about 30 minutes. Once filtered, the coloured liquid is ready to dye various yarns or fabrics, such as hemp, cotton, wool, and silk.

To preserve the quality of the infusion, we recommend storing it in dark glass bottles, thus protecting it from light.

Infusions

A infusion for dyeing is a colouring solution obtained from dyeing herbs, leaves or roots dried and chopped up to look like a herbal tea; they are put into hot water to extract the pigments and a colour bath is obtained in which yarns or fabrics are dipped for dyeing.

Doses and timing

Maeko avoids going into details concerning proportions, doses and specific times, leaving such information to those who already have experience in natural dyeing.

It is essential that those approaching this process have the freedom to experiment and adapt the techniques according to their own needs and experience.

Here we offer an extensive showcase, designed to encourage the practice of hand-dyeing and stimulate everyone's creativity.
