L’Rock alum is a double salt of potassium and hydrated aluminium sulphate; the salt of choice for the etching of natural fibres known for its non-toxicity.

It is commonly used for staining before dyeing yarn or woollen fabrics.

The amount of Alum of Rocca to be used varies according to the purity of the water: smaller quantities are used in low-lime water, while in hard water it is advisable to increase the dose. It is important to be aware that hydrated aluminium easily binds to impurities in the water without sticking to the fibres; excessive use can damage the fibres themselves.

L’Rock alum must be dissolved in boiling water before being added to the vessel where you will be treating the yarns or fabrics.

Dyeing auxiliaries

The Dyeing auxiliaries are essential to ensure uniform application of the natural dye on the textile fibres and correct fixation. Each auxiliary gradually and uniformly releases its acidity or alkalinity, thus promoting optimal dyeing and preventing possible colour changes. Their use ensures excellent, long-lasting results in artisan dyeing.

Doses and timing

Maeko avoids going into details concerning proportions, doses and specific times, leaving such information to those who already have experience in natural dyeing.

It is essential that those approaching this process have the freedom to experiment and adapt the techniques according to their own needs and experience.

Here we offer an extensive showcase, designed to encourage the practice of hand-dyeing and stimulate everyone's creativity.
