Maeko aims to offer upholstery made from natural fibres, designed for designers and creative people committed to highly sustainable production. Our natural fillings promote the use of virgin raw materials and contribute to a significant reduction of agro-industrial waste in the textile hemp supply chain.
Made from hemp fibre, our fillings are breathable and thermal insulating, making them an excellent ecological choice for protection from the cold. Hemp is one of the most environmentally friendly fibres available, with a cultivation cycle that lasts just 100 days, without the use of pesticides, and plays a key role in nourishing and controlling soil erosion. It is, without doubt, the most versatile plant on the planet.
In addition, our fillings are blended with PLA fibres, making them 100% biodegradable, moisture-resistant, breathable, flexible, lightweight, non-flammable and recyclable.
PLA (polylactic acid) is a polymer produced by fermentation from carbohydrate sources, such as maize starch or sugar cane. The process starts with wet grinding of the maize, which allows the starch to be separated. Next, the starch is mixed with acids or enzymes and heated. During this step, the starch is transformed into dextrose (D-glucose), the corn sugar. Finally, fermentation of the glucose produces L-lactic acid, which forms the basic component of PLA.
