Yarn titling

Yarn Titles: Direct and Indirect Titling

The count of a yarn represents the relationship between length and weight. There are two methods of counting:

Direct Titration (the ratio of weight to length), expressed in:

- Tex
- Decitex
- Ditex
- Den. (Denarii)

Indirect titration (the ratio of length to weight), denoted as:

- Nm (metric number)
- Ne (English number)

Importance of Titration

This mode of measurement is adopted because it is not possible to know the cross-section of a wire precisely; the only measurements available are weight and length. For example, a rubber wire has a different mode of indication, referring to diameter.

Indirect Metric Measurement (Nm)

Indirect Metric (Nm) measurement is used for combed thread. A value of Nm 1/10000 corresponds to 10,000 metres of thread in 1 kg. The higher the count, the thinner the thread.

Conversions

- From Ne a Nm: multiply the value Ne for 0.59
- From Nm a Ne: multiply the value Nm per 1.69
