Madder (Rubia cordifolia) extract
Madder, commonly known as India Madder, is an evergreen plant native to the Himalayas and is an economically significant source of red dye for the textile industry. The roots of this plant produce a range of red hues, ranging from orange and brick red to blood red and fiery reds.
The colour obtained varies depending on several factors, including climatic conditions, the type of soil in which the roots grow, their age, the mineral content of the water used for dyeing, the temperature of the process and the type of pot used. The amount of Madder used in relation to the fibre also influences the final result. This extract can be applied to a variety of fabrics and yarns, including cotton, linen, hemp, wool and silk.
Extracts
The powder extracts are a concentrated form of natural pigment, obtained from plants, flowers, roots, animal sources and minerals. These extracts are stable, keep for a long time and allow for precise dosing, making them ideal for those who wish to colour yarns and fabrics naturally.
Please note that the photo is for illustrative purposes only: the color of the natural extracts may differ from that shown in the shop, but the quality is always guaranteed and tested before distribution.
Doses and timing
Maeko avoids going into details concerning proportions, doses and specific times, leaving such information to those who already have experience in natural dyeing.
It is essential that those approaching this process have the freedom to experiment and adapt the techniques according to their own needs and experience.
Here we offer an extensive showcase, designed to encourage the practice of hand-dyeing and stimulate everyone's creativity.
