The extract of Lacquer Red is obtained from the secretion of small insects, the Kerria lacca, which live in tropical and subtropical regions such as India and Thailand.

This natural substance, used in powder form, dissolves easily in hot water and is used to dye yarns and fabrics of natural origin.

Depending on the amount used, which varies between 20% and 100% of the weight of the material to be dyed, shades ranging from bright red to crimson to deep burgundy can be obtained.

To ensure an even and lasting colour, fabrics are pre-treated with a mordant and immersed in the dye solution for between 40 and 60 minutes, stirring constantly. Once dyeing is complete, the fabrics must be thoroughly rinsed in cold water and dried in the shade to preserve their brilliance and colour intensity.

Extracts

The powder extracts are a concentrated form of natural pigment, obtained from plants, flowers, roots, animal sources and minerals. These extracts are stable, keep for a long time and allow for precise dosing, making them ideal for those who wish to colour yarns and fabrics naturally.

Please note that the photo is for illustrative purposes only: the color of the natural extracts may differ from that shown in the shop, but the quality is always guaranteed and tested before distribution.

Doses and timing

Maeko avoids going into details concerning proportions, doses and specific times, leaving such information to those who already have experience in natural dyeing.

It is essential that those approaching this process have the freedom to experiment and adapt the techniques according to their own needs and experience.

Here we offer an extensive showcase, designed to encourage the practice of hand-dyeing and stimulate everyone's creativity.
