Dearly beloved,
\nToday I am questioning myself and wondering how.
\nWhat should be the reaction when you see an industrial network falling apart, when know-how disappears and people, workers are left behind?<\/p>\n

Franca Guido and I recently went to Italy to meet a player in the wool supply chain: Carbofin Srl, a company near Prato in Tuscany that washes and carbonizes this beautiful natural raw material.<\/p>\n

This company had been recommended to me by an Italian spinning mill, the Filarte company, as the best place to wash greasy wool and as the only company able to provide this service from small quantities.<\/p>\n

This company, which employs a dozen or so people and has more than fifty years of experience in the care of raw wool from Europe and abroad, will close down for good in a few weeks after fulfilling its last orders.<\/p>\n

These are the consequences of a total lock-down, a difficult restart and poor government assistance. Today, the scouring and charring capacities, about 25 tonnes per day of raw wool, are not being fully utilised, so the company is forced to close down.<\/p>\n

Knowing the crisis the fashion industry is facing, one is not surprised that all links in the chain are affected, including those we do not know or who seem distant: farmers, breeders and even first processors.<\/p>\n

There are few industrial-sized wool washing companies in Europe and only two carbonization units, including Carbofin Srl.<\/p>\n

The loss of such an important manufacture has an impact on the entire supply chain in Italy, but also most likely in France and Europe, where many brands and manufacturers rely on and source from the Italian textile supply chain.<\/p>\n

An infrastructure for wool scouring and carbonisation not only supplies spinning mills with clean, ready-to-spin wool for the creation of high-quality yarns, but also supplies industries that value wool in building materials, mattresses, decoration, but also home care and cosmetics through the extraction of by-products such as lanolin.<\/p>\n

We have seen 1083 give a second life to Tissage de France and the dream of seeing this company saved by one or more players or the textile and fashion industry, will we be able to do something for Carbofin too?<\/p>\n
