It is disconcerting to see how lightly we buy objects in packaging that we immediately get rid of after purchase:
shopping bags, containers, boxes, cases, glasses, bottles, straws... We focus on the content and forget that we have also bought the packaging, the cost of which, both in terms of money and environmental impact, has now become truly unsustainable. Although we had recently begun to be more aware of the devastating effects that plastics have on the environment, with the outbreak of this global pandemic we have definitely reversed the positive trend of sensitivity we were beginning to have towards single-use.
What used to belong only to specific or sanitary sectors has been extended to the normal population and in an exponential manner. The use of disposable gloves and masks, which have always been considered and treated as special waste, now, contrary to the most banal hygienic rules and common sense, we find them scattered everywhere in our cities, in the meadows or in the most unbelievable areas such as forests and of course in the sea.
Whether it is deliberate vandalism carried out by people heedless of the environment and their neighbours, or simply because they fall out of their pockets and bags, there is no place where we do not see this hideous rubbish littered on the ground.
We tell you, we ask you and we implore you: you who do not work in special wards or hospitals, avoid using non-woven surgical masks because they are seriously polluting our planet, buy only washable hygienic masks or make your own at home, recycling a good hemp sheet or a piece of clothing you no longer use.
Do it, it is not difficult because it is serious!
It is good to know that only 9% of the world's used plastics and synthetic fibres are recycled, and the remaining 91% takes more than 400 years to degrade, breaking down into small fragments or micro plastics that never disappear and creep into the food chain being ingested not only by animals but also by us.
This also applies to TNT surgical masks, visors, gloves or other devices marketed in this 2020!
